Teak Products

Teak is originally from Southeast Asia and it has been used for over 2,000 years.  It was valued for its extraordinary durability; in fact, you can find temples and palaces in the Far East that have teak floors, teak walls and even teak beams that have lasted for centuries.

During the last century, it was discovered that high-quality teak could be grown in Central America.  In Costa Rica, virtually all the teak is farm grown, so there is no impact on the country's precious rainforests.

There are many advantages to using teak.  Here are just a few:

  • Teak is impervious to water and moisture.

  • Teak is highly resistant to insects.

  • Teak is very stable.  Once put in place it will not move, buckle, cup or twist.

  • Teak can be sanded to a very smooth, near “glass-like” finish.

However, we think that the biggest advantage to using teak is that . . . . it is simply beautiful.  Teak can be stained to any hue, and even unfinished it is a delight to see.

Because of these advantages, Costa Rican teak is now used for flooring in up-scale homes.  It is used for docks and decks.  It is used for decking on yachts.  It is used for stair treads and for window trim.  It is used for entry doors and for outdoor furniture.  Just to name a few.

Below are some of the items that Atromitos of Costa Rica creates on a regular basis.

Teak Floor Planks

These are solid teak tongue-and-groove floor planks.  We mill stress-grooves on the bottoms of each of the boards.  They are 5/8 inch thick.  They can be either 3 or 4 inches wide.  They are precision cut by our craftsmen using the best equipment.

Make Sure You are Getting Real Teak

When you buy teak from Atromitos of Costa Rica you are buying real teak.  The species is “Tectona Grandis.”  Some companies in the USA may offer things like “Brazilian Teak” or “Golden Teak.”  These are not real teak; they are cheap substitutes.

Real teak is one of the most stable woods available.  Because of its high oil content, it is naturally resistant to insects, it is ideal for humid climates and it will last and last and last.  Remember to look for "Tectona Grandis."  Anything else is not real teak.
