Costa Rican Cypress

cupressus lusitanica.jpg

Costa Rican Cypress is the species “Cupressus Lusitanica.”  It has many other names depending on the part of the world; for example, it is also called Mexican Cypress, Cedro Blanco, White Cedar, and Cedar of Goa.

Costa Rican Cypress is not the same as the cypress tree found in the Everglades and other marshy areas of the Southeastern U. S.  Costa Rican Cypress is native to Central America.  It is an evergreen tree grown in tropical areas at elevations above 3,000 feet.  Genetically one of its close relatives is the California Redwood.

In Costa Rica, it is used as a Christmas tree.  Young branches are used in great quantities for decorations during all fiestas, and it is used for making wreaths.  Because of its natural oils, it has medicinal uses in some countries.  Breathing its leaves is often done to cure hangovers.

Because of the natural oils in the Costa Rican Cypress trees, it is naturally resistant to weather and most insects.  It has a favorable odor to people, but insects don't like it.

We use Costa Rican Cypress for two major products:

Cypress Fencing

Our basic cypress fencing product is 3/4 inch thick.  It is 5 inches wide and 8 feet tall.  The tops can be dog-eared and both ends are waxed.  It has a light amber color and a distinctive rustic look.  It is resistant to moisture and decay.  It is a superior product to western red cedar, because it is 50% more dense.

Cypress Paneling

Cypress paneling is ideal for inside closets.  Although it produces a pleasant aromatic scent that is good to us, it will drive insects away.  Costa Rican Cypress is a great choice for long-term storage of clothing, for kitchen pantries, for the back wall of kitchen cabinets, for saunas and for wine cellars.  The cypress paneling is a tongue-and-groove product which makes for easy installation.
